The luxury time pieces within September's Jewellery Auction

September is proving to be a fantastic month for watch entries here at Dawsons! A number of luxury watches will be going under the hammer within our Jewellery, Silver & Watches sale on Thursday 22nd September. Here, you can find out more about six of our favourite watches from the upcoming sale.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

One of our standout lots in this month's sale, this automatic 39mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15300ST watch is estimated to sell for a staggering £28,000-£32,000. Boasting a stylish steel case with a white "petite tapisserie" dial, this is one of the most collectible watches to exist and a gamechanger in its field. 

Audemars Piquet (AP) have always been a strong brand who have produced some fantastic compilations, but like most other luxury watch brands in the late 1960s to early 70s, were struggling to make an impact against the likes of the Rolex Submariner that was forging a huge name for itself. 

Gérald Genta, a renowned designer accredited to many luxury watches across numerous brands, was brought in to combat this problem, and as a result came up with the Royal Oak. Choosing to focus closely on the movement of the watch, AP placed particular emphasis on the bracelet and case. The time spent reviewing each and every detail of the watch's mechanisms was not wasted, it permanently changed the industry, raising the standard of watchmaking to a level that had to be met from then on by every other manufacturer in order for them to compete. 

Luxury watchmaking was redefined, and since then, public figures and celebrities have flocked to get their hands on them, but only after circumnavigating the two to three year waiting list!

This particular watch has a fascinating story behind it as the vendor was given it directly by AP after he entered his Aston Martin DB7 Zagato into the Salon Privé Concours d’Elégance in 2008 at the Hurlingham Club... which it won! Because of this, we are lucky to have all of the original boxing and papers direct from AP, making it a rarity in its own right.

A Rolex Sea-Dweller Submariner 2000 

This beautifully aged Double Red 1968 model, belonged to a sculptor called Peter William Nicholas who worked in and amongst the likes of Barbara Hepworth. It was bought new and comes to Dawsons directly from Peter's family.

The watch is one of the first Sea Dwellers, almost at prototype level, and the first of its kind to feature a gas escapement valve on the case side. It was built to withstand up to 2,000ft water, and a depth of 610m/2,000ft. 

This sort of model is an extremely collectable and timeless classic, not to mention it will only ever go up in value... given its reputation this particular watch is estimated to sell for £20,000-£30,000.

Patek Phillipe Calatrava travel time 

This rose gold Patek Phillipe Calatrava 5134R-001 travel time wristwatch is the perfect travel companion. It boasts a Swiss-made hand-wound movement, and a split-hand function meaning you can move it forwards or backwards an hour depending on where you are and using the triggers on the left side of the case. 

Detail is everything when it comes to luxury watches, and this piece certainly understands that. The additional 24-hour indicator sub-dial and seconds sub-dial features offer precision and sophistication. 

Patek have worked with designers like Genta to develop some of the most beautifully crafted luxury watches in the world. This hugely underrated piece is great value for money, with an estimation of £12,000-£15,000.

This 18ct yellow gold watch has a fascinating origin. The Omani royal crest of the Khanjar dagger that has been applied to the dial, tells us that the watch would have most likely been given as a gift from the royal family of Oman and made specifically for the family upon request by IWC.

Although exteremly rare, this isn't the only watch of its kind. From the 1950s onwards, the Omani royal family commissioned watches with the Khanjar dial from the likes of Rolex, AP and other luxury watchmakers, and they were given as gifts to select people who served the family or country. This makes watches like this one highly collectable pieces.

Everything about this watch radiates elegance. From its gold woven bracelet, to the dial that displays a subtle red or brown according to the light. The combination of its rarity, subtlty, and fascinating provenance gives it an estimated value of £6,000 to £8,000.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

A beautiful watch and a great example of its kind, this luxury time piece features a smart black dial with three sub-dials and T Swiss Made T at its base. Famously known for being the watch that went to the moon, this watch is the same model as the one worn by Neil Armstrong on many of his space expeditions. However, it carries its own sentiments now.

It was bought brand new in Australia back in 1967, from Angus & Coote PTY LTD. The vendor wore it every day whilst working in an iron ore mine in southern Australia and has worn it ever since. The estimated value is £6,000 to £8,000.

_{Estimate £1,000-£1,500} 

Heuer Skipper

Despite its more humble estimate of £1,000 to £1,500, this hand-wound sailing watch is still a favourite with our experts. It is an orignal Heuer, made before they later became TAG Heuer, and is in great condition given its history of being worn at sea. The dial in particular is in fantastic condition, and the bezel also very good for its year. 

However, one of its more exciting features, is the personal engraving on the back that reads 'Good sailing' and the date. Although it could be polished off if preferred, this authentic detail is a nice reminder of its place in time and the adventures it went on.
